Google has quietly entered the mobile search market with the stealth launch of 1-800-GOOG-411. This completely automated service allows a user to find a business listing and be connected for free, even offering SMS of results back when calling from a mobile phone.
This experimental service offers the following:
Initial testing was positive: I was able to search for Amici's Pizza in San Francisco, Omni Comics and Cards in Wethersfield CT and when searching for steak in Omaha, it found eight options - including Omaha Prime, where I had a very mediocre cut of beef a few months ago.
There are some rough patches: when searching for "Oyster" in Salt Lake City, it thought I said "Questar" - which was quickly remedied by saying "start over". Searching for "Zoya" in San Francisco returned "Celia's", but searching for "Zoya Restaurant" found a close match, which was simply "Zoya". Still, it does show that the platform is handling very complex grammars combined with Google's search technology. The fact that this is completely automated is certainly impressive.
It's certainly not ready for production yet, but it is ready for people in the speech community to start kicking the tires. Post your experiences here in the comments section.
